Joseph Goldstein passes away

Joe died Saturday, June 27, 2015 in his home after a extended illness.

Joseph Goldstein's life has touch almost everyone in the microanalysis community.  Joe may be best known in our community as the lead author of the much referenced "Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-ray Microanalysis" book which is currently in its third edition and was more commonly simply referred to as "Goldstein".  Joe was also a founder and long-time lecturer at the Lehigh Microscopy School which has just completed its 44 year.  Thousands of scientists have read his book and attended his courses.  At the University of Mass, Amherst, he was a Distinguished Professor and previously a Dean.  Joe's personal research interests involved applying electron beam microanalysis techniques to meteorite samples .  He even has a minor planet,  4989 Joegoldstein, named in his honor.
